WCW Velocity is in La Crosse, Wisconsin tonight. We are officially past the horror of Halloween Havoc and the road to WrestleWar is underway. Scott Hudson & Don West are our guides for the evening as Elix Skipper makes his way to the ring.
The match opens at a blistering pace as Hayashi controls Skipper with a few arm drags and a spinning wheel kick that sends "Primetime" retreating. Skipper eventually slows the temp with a big roundhouse kick of his own. Hayashi is sent to the outside, but lands oon the apron and flies back in with a springboard crossbody followed by a barrage of stiff martial arts kicks to the chest. As Kaz climbs to the top, Kid Romeo hops on the apron to deliver a sharp jab to the throat while the referee is distracted. Skipper hops to the top and hits a huge Top Rope Frankensteiner on Hayashi and that’s enough for the 3!
As much as it pains me to say, the Hayashi experiment may be over. He is fantastic in the ring, but it seems the crowd plateaued with him. I do think Skipper is a guy WCW could do more with, so its interesting him and Romeo getting some shine lately. I wonder if Hayashi can be salvaged or he becomes the ultimate Cruiserweight gatekeeper.
The "Mysterious Mask" sting plays on the big screen. It’s the same cryptic imagery seen taunting Chavo Guerrero Jr. on Nitro.
The bell rings and we get a tie up to start. Jett forces Swinger into the corner, but Swinger immediately goes to the eyes, then slamming Jett’s head into the turnbuckle. Swinger tries to keep Jett grounded, but “EZ” fights back after being tossed into the ropes, Jett comes back with a back handspring elbow that sends Swinger scrambling to the floor. Swinger catches Jett coming back in with a hotshot across the top rope and slows the pace with a grounded abdominal stretch, grabbing the ropes for extra leverage until the referee catches him. Jett fights back, but Swinger quickly dumps him to the floor. Jett gets on the apron and counters a wild swing from Swinger with a shot of his own. Jett flips over the top rope and demolishes Swinger with a huge lariat! Swinger might be out. Jett lifts up the nearly lifeless Swinger and nails a Crash Landing then covers for the win.
I really like Jett, I really do, but feel he’s been sitting on the launching pad since Big Bang. I don’t know how good of a promo he is, but in the ring he has all the tools to do more then he has been.
Backstage, Steve Corino is standing by with Jazz. Corino cuts a standard "King of Old School" promo, telling anyone who will listen that he’s the best wrestler in the building and that it’s only a matter of time before he’s draped in championship gold. He’s got the confidence, that’s for sure.
Corino and Mero lock up, with Corino immediately transitioning into a hammerlock that forces Mero to the ropes. Mero comes back with a droptoe hold into a front facelock, Corino battles back and hits a big exploder suplex on Mero and gets a 2. Mero tries to turn the tide with a flurry of his signature boxing style jabs before sending Corino into the ropes and lifting him with a big back body drop. Corino scrambles to the outside to regroup. Mero follows him outside and eats a huge Super Kick from the “King of Old School”. Corino gets in the ring and demands the referee count Mero out. Mero stumbles to his feet at 7 and gets in the ring by 8, but Corino drops a big elbow across the back of his head and neck. Corino grounds Mero with a neckcrank and starts yelling at him to tap, but Mero starts to rally the crowd behind him. Mero fights to his feet and sends Corino into the ropes and ducks a clothesline as Corino rebounds. Mero hits a Thesz Press of all things and starts pounding on Corino. Mero is back up and signalling to end it. Corino rises and Mero lifts him up for a TKO, but Corino slides out the back instead. He has Mero right where he needs him and nails an Old School Expulsion for the 3-count!
Nice little match for these two and it’s nice to see Corino back wrestling for himself. I don’t mind the pairing with Jazz, but feel Corino was really rising up and seems ready for more then Joanie Laurer, but at the same time, Corino had some nuclear heat in this match and I think his time with Laurer is really exposing the casual audience to him.
