SHOW REVIEW: SEPTEMBER 2001
September 22, 2001: WCW Velocity Results!
POSTED BY DYLAN DRAMA | SEPTEMBER 23, 2001

It's Saturday Night, which means WCW Velocity is back LIVE on FX! Scott Hudson & Don West are our hosts for the 3rd ever edition of Velocity!

Match 1: BG James vs. Crowbar

The match started with James playing to the crowd, but Crowbar quickly turned the tide with his high-risk, frantic style. Crowbar took control during the middle portion, grounding James with a snapping suplex and a springboard splash from the apron. He even managed to lock in a seated surfboard stretch, slowing the pace to keep the "Doggfather" grounded. James eventually caught Crowbar mid-air with a desperation boot to the face, sparking a comeback. After a series of signature punches and a shaky shaky knee drop, James hooked Crowbar for the Pumphandle Drop, slamming him down to secure the victory.

Winner: BG James
Rating: 5.8 / 10

I almost forgot about Crowbar! He seemed to be getting more opportunities earlier and has drifted into the background a bit. He put on a good showing versus James here, but James was allowed more time to shine, obviously, as WCW seems to be looking for a direction for him now that he is seemingly out of the Heavyweight title picture for the time being.

After the match, James is on the mic. He does some rapping schtick and talks about how its time for "The Doggfather" to refocus and find success.

Match 2: Paul London vs. Elix Skipper w/Kid Romeo

Some typical high octane action form the Cruiserweights, that saw London showing off his incredible agility early on with a series of deep arm drags and a standing moonsault. However, Kid Romeo’s presence at ringside was the difference maker. Every time London seemed inc control, Romeo provided a distraction, allowing Skipper to regain his footing. London sold a brutal backbreaker from Skipper like he’d been snapped in half, and while he nearly pulled off an upset with a sunset flip, Skipper rolled through. "Primetime" caught a charging London with a stiff kick to the gut and planted him with the Overdrive for the win.

Winner: Elix Skipper
Rating: 3.7 / 10

It was forgettable. They did some cool stuff, but the match never really flowed and the crowd didn't care. I think London has a bright future, and his selling is phenomenal. Curious if or when he gets more to do then just lose.

We are backstage for an Arn's Office segment on Velocity! Arn is talking to CW Anderson and Pete Gas and saying they've actually done okay since being kicked from the nest, but they need to do better, they need to find what makes them standout. Cue La Parka & Shark Boy barging into the office. La Parka starts yelling in Spanish as Shark Boy lurks around the background, pretending to bite things. He ends up biting Arn's behind which sets the Enforcer off, demanding everyone leave his office.

Match 3: Tommy Dreamer & Rob Van Dam vs. Disqo & Mike Sanders

RVD and Dreamer were firing on all cylinders, overwhelming Sanders with a combination of martial arts and brawling. The veteran Disqo managed to trip Dreamer during a ropes run, allowing the heels to isolate the "Innovator of Violence" for a few minutes. They utilized some basic double-teaming and frequent tags to keep Dreamer away from his corner, but the Columbus crowd stayed behind him. Dreamer eventually caught Sanders with a desperation desperation lariat, making the hot tag to RVD. Van Dam cleared the ring with spinning kicks, sending Disqo to the floor. Dreamer followed up by spiking Disqo with a DDT on the outside before hitting Sanders with a Spicolli Driver in the ring. RVD immediately ascended the turnbuckle and delivered a massive Five Star Frog Splash to finish Sanders off.

Winners: Tommy Dreamer & Rob Van Dam
Rating: 6.5 / 10

Basically what you'd expect here. I'm not sold on Dreamer & RVD being a team going forward, though so far it seems more like a temporary alliance. As much as WCW does well, the entire RVD & Dreamer vs. Bagwell & Brown feud seems really shallow and I'm ready to move on.

Dreamer & RVD are celebrating with Buff Bagwell & D'Lo Brown show up! A big brawl ensues between the two teams, as Velocity fades out and Scott Hudson hypes Nitro next week and Fall Brawl as well.

Overall Show Rating: 6.8 / 10
DYLAN'S FINAL THOUGHTS: There was a bunch of really well produced highlight videos throughout the night to help keep people caught up on Nitro incase they can't catch it every week, which are cool but are redundant for people like me who watch every show. The show itself was fine. The cruiserweight match left something to be desired, but it just didn't work this week for whatever reason, but getting the guys on TV is what Velocity is really about. James and Crowbar was fine, the main event was okay to good. Velocity still makes a fun Saturday night viewing for a hardcore wrestling fan.
