SHOW REVIEW: VELOCITY DEBUT
September 8, 2001: WCW Velocity on FX, Debut Show, Results
POSTED BY DYLAN DRAMA | SEPTEMBER 8, 2001

WCW Velocity debut on FX on Saturday night. I caught the show and will be doing quick reviews every week!

The show opens with a generic rock song over top of the intro video. Color scheme seems to be mainly green and black. Scott Hudson and Don West are the commentary team and welcome us to the show promising some great action and highlights from Nitro.

Show opens with a big video package that went over the last few months of history of Lance Storm's World Heavyweight title reign, and the emergence of Booker T & Diamond Dallas Page as challengers.

Match 1: Shane Helms vs. Kid Romeo

Nice fun little match here and basically exactly what you would expect. Romeo only got a little bit of offense in, and even almost hit the Last Kiss at one point, but Helms got out of it. Helms dominated and hit his highlight reel moves and finished it off with a Vertebreaker for the win.

Winner: Shane Helms
Rating: 5.6 / 10

Fine cruiserweight match, and basically the type of match I expect to be on this new show which is very clearly a b-show.

BG James is backstage and cuts a promo saying after losing to Lance Storm, its time he refocuses and figures out what he really needs to do to succeed in WCW.

Match 2: Blonde Bombshell vs. Leia Meow

This was hard to sit through and luckily very short. Neither women really knows how to wrestle and it shows. Not a great match in any way. Bombshell wins with an X-Factor and I wish I could forget this match happened.

Winner: Blonde Bombshell
Rating: 0.8 / 10

Not even 1 star. A terrible choice to put on a debut of a new show, even if its a filler late night show on the weekend. Paul London or Mark Jindrak or Pete Gas & CW Anderson or basically anyone else could have used this spot and actually been competent. The worst thing WCW has put on TV since coming back.

Stacy Keibler & Shawn Stasiak are backstage. Stacy is trying to hype Stasiak up saying tonight is his chance to really prove he's the Mecca of Manhood and become a fighting champion, like her.

Main Event: WCW United States Championship - Rob Van Dam (c) vs. Shawn Stasiak w/Stacy Keibler

A great main event for the debut show, and a great use of RVD to make the show seem important. Match was a great back and forth and Stasiak got a couple near falls. Stacy gets involved near the end, but Stasiak ends up getting distracted instead of Van Dam. It allows RVD to hit a big diving thrust kick and then a Five Star Frog Splash to retain the title!

Winner and Still WCW United States Champion: Rob Van Dam
Rating: 7.4 / 10

Great main event and a match you should go try and see. RVD & Stasiak wrestled back in June as part of the Patriot Cup and this match was basically just a better version of that match.

After the match, RVD is celebrating when he's jumped by Buff Bagwell & D'Lo Brown. They don't do much damage as Tommy Dreamer runs out and chases them off with a chair. Dreamer & RVD stand tall in the ring as Buff & D'Lo jawjack their way up the ramp as the show fades out.

Overall Show Rating: 6.1 / 10
DYLAN'S FINAL THOUGHTS: Velocity is basically WCW Saturday Night or WWF Heat, whatever you want to compare it too. The womens match was absolutley terrible. Had that match been instead any other competent workers putting on a match, this would have been a great show. Luckily RVD vs. Stasiak really saved the show and made it worth watching. The announce team of Hudson & West was okay too. Don West was maybe a bit much for me at some points, but for a guys first time calling wrestling, at least he had passion.
