We are LIVE from Madison Square Garden as WCW has invaded WWF's home territory with WCW Crowd Control! Big opening video package plays over "Greed" by Godsmack which is the theme of this years Crowd Control!
We open with what is WCW's new standard with Joey Styles & Jerry "The King" Lawler in the ring, hyping tonight's show while quick video packages hype each match, including Lawler's own 1-on-1 match vs. Steve Corino later tonight!
The Garden was rocking for this one. Absolute high flying insanity from the jump with Karagias hitting a 450 off the top rope onto a group on the floor. Early on, the Jung Dragons tried to scale opposite sides of the same ladder, only for Shane Helms to push the whole thing over, sending them both throat-first across the top rope. Shannon Moore takes a huge bump halfway through the match eliminating himself after Chavo Guerrero Jr. tipped the ladder, sending Moore flying from 15 feet up through a table on the outside. Kaz Hayashi seemed to have the match won after a series of stiff kicks to Karagias, but Shane Helms grabbed him and spiked him with a brutal Vertebreaker that left Kaz motionless on the canvas. Yang then entered the fray, taking out Helms with a massive springboard spinning heel kick that sent Shane tumbling out of the ring to the floor. Yang climbed the ladder and was about to win, with his hand literally on the hook, when Chavo tipped the ladder, sending Yang crashing all the way to the outside in a sickening fall. Chavo didn't hesitate, scrambling up the rungs to retrieve the title and win.
Fun Cruiserweight Chaos! I did not see Chavo walking out of this with the title. All men delivered, it looks like Moore was maybe injured or they are playing that up as after his big bump halfway through, he wasn't seen. Yang getting dumped by Chavo with another insane bump is also going to be on highlight reels for years to come.
This felt like a heavyweight prize fight. Awesome started fast, hitting a massive suicide dive to the outside that nearly took out a front row of photographers. Inside the ring, Awesome punished Booker with a release Verticle Suplex that sent the former champ halfway across the ring, following it up with a top-rope lariat that turned Booker inside out. Booker fought back with a flurry of kicks and a huge spinebuster that shook the Garden floor. Awesome nearly had it after a top rope splash, but Booker got the shoulder up at 2 and a hair to 3! Awesome went for a powerbomb, but Booker slipped out, nailed a spinning heel kick, and followed up with the Scissors Kick. Awesome kicks out at 2! As Awesome slowly stands up, Booker quickly hooks him and nails a Book End! 1-2-3!
I think people forget just what a worker Mike Awesome can be when he wants to be or is allowed to be. What a freaking match from these two. The right person won, and I don't feel Awesome is going to be hurt by Booker's win here, and I feel Booker needed the win a bit more actually. Would love to see these two really be let loose in a main event feud.
The crowd was dying to see Joanie get her hands on Stacy. O'Haire used his power to toss Stasiak around, but Stasiak managed to ground the big man with a clip to the knee while Stacy distracted the ref. O'Haire eventually made the hot tag to Joanie, who cleared the ring and cornered Stacy, only for Stasiak to jump in and save his partner from Powerbomb. Stasiak tried to low blow Joanie, but it had no effect! Stacy hits Joanie from behind, but she turns around and Stacy is like a deer in the headlights. Joanie goes to hit Stacy with a Powerbomb again, but Stacy manages to shove her off and Joanie ends up backing right up into Stasiak who hits a Reverse DDT on the 9th Wonder of the World! Stacy goes for the cover but only gets a 2! O'Haire in now and he sends Stasiak over the top. O'Haire has Stacy cornered and grabs her, and sends her flying towards Joanie who takes her down with a clothesline. Joanie going for yet another Powerbomb, but Stasiak is back in and goes for a flying forearm smash to break it up, but Joanie sees it coming and moves out of the way, shoving Stacy aside. Stacy rolls to the outisde. Stasiak up now and he turns right into a big kick from O'Haire that sends him spinning. He stumbled into Joanie who nails him with a Huge Powerbomb! O'Haire up top. Seanton Bomb! O'Haire covers Stasiak, 1-2-3!
Okay match that ultimately wasn't much different then what O'Haire & Stasiak have been giving us already. The added star power of Laurer really helped and her and Stacy teasing a confrontation played well to the crowd. I'm still not sure Stacy knows how to wrestle, but time will tell.
We go backstage where the Misfits In Action are getting hyped for their Tag Team Title match. Out of no where, the Full Blooded Italians attack! They decimate MIA and drive them into the walls, doors, and production boxes stacked backstage. The three surround the Blonde Bombshell, but Guido stops them all and says "and still Tag Team Champions!" as the FBI laugh and walk away.
This was pure mayhem and easily the most violent Buff has ever been. Bagwell brought a trash can into play early, but RVD used it against him with a springboard kick that drove the metal into Buff’s skull. They brawled into the crowd where RVD hit a crossbody off the hockey boards, sending both men into the concrete with a sickening thud. Back in the ring, Bagwell found a fire extinguisher, blinding RVD before blasting him with a chair to weaken his ribs. Buff then set up a table in the corner, but RVD reversed a whip, sending Bagwell through the wood with a thunderous splash that left splinters everywhere. RVD gets a two, but Bagwell shows real fight kicking out at 2. RVD comes charging in but eats a low blow from Bagwell! Buff to the outside and he is tossing chair-after-chair into the ring. Bagwell now back in, and as RVD slowly recovers, Bagwell heads to the middle rope and hits a brutal Blockbuster onto a pile of steel chairs! RVD miraculously kicked out after a long 2 count! Buff is beside himself and starts berating everyone he can see. He grabs a chair and is looking to finish RVD off, but RVD dodges the big shot as he makes his way to his feet! Bagwell goes to hit him again, but RVD instead hits a huge Van Daminator! RVD up top as Bagwell lays upon the pile of chairs, Five Star Frog Splash! It's over!
Another fine match from these two and ultimately the right guy won. I'm not sure where Bagwell goes from here, as it seems WCW doesn't want him to really be up the card, but he's too over to dismiss entirely. RVD has become the great match guy and the crowd loves him for it, but there isn't much character or storyline depth to what he's doing, but maybe that's okay as RVD has that connection with the crowd that seems to transcend traditional wrestling storytelling.
After the match, as RVD celebrates, a big hooded figure enters the ring and attacks him with a chair. He beats RVD mercilessly as Bagwell slowly recovers and watches on. The figure stands over RVD and Bagwell has now risen to his feet and his smiling. The figure holds his hands out and shakes his head, before removing his hood to reveal D'Lo Brown! D'Lo and Buff exchange a look. D'Lo grabs the US title and puts it on RVD who is now laying atop the pile of chairs. D'Lo climbs up top and nails a Lo Down Frog Splash on RVD! Buff pats D'Lo on the back as they exit the ring, leaving RVD in a heap.
These guys really kept the pace up here. Kanyon and Storm started the match with some incredible chain wrestling, trading waistlocks and hammerlocks at a blistering pace before the veterans James and Hennig rushed in to break it up, turning the technical showcase into a four-way brawl. James caught Hennig and set him up for a Pumphandle Drop that nearly ended the match early, but Storm intercepted with a perfectly timed superkick to James’ jaw that sent him tumbling through the ropes. The action never slowed down, and at one point, Kanyon caught James with a spectacular Kanyon Kutter while James was busy trying to pummel Hennig in the corner, and the Garden was ready to explode as Kanyon went for the cover. Hennig eventually regained control, hitting a snap mare and a rolling neck snap before almost getting the win with a Perfect Plex on Storm, but Dawn Marie hopped onto the apron and distracted the ref just long enough for Storm to recover and kick out at two. Storm then used his technical prowess to keep the challengers at bay, catching BG James in a bone-snapping ankle lock that Hennig had to break up with a desperate basement dropkick to Storm's knee. Kanyon almost stole the victory yet again after a Flatliner on Storm, but as the referee’s hand was coming down for the three, Hennig pulled the official out of the ring at the last second to save the match and the crowd was absolutely livid. The match reached a boiling point when Kanyon and James took the fight to the floor, where Kanyon attempted a diving clothesline off the barricade, but James countered by catching him mid-air and driving him spine-first into the steel ring post. Both men collapsed in a heap of tangled limbs. The finish was a masterclass in wrestling as Storm and Hennig traded a series of technical reversals on the mat, with Hennig trying to bridge into a pin only for Storm to float over into a single leg crab attempt. Finally, Storm managed to sit back deep on the Canadian Maple Leaf, cinching it in and forcing a battered Hennig to tap out in the center of the ring.
Multi-man matches can get messy quick, but these guys pulled it off. I think Storm winning makes sense, but Kanyon was my personal pick to maybe tease him turning face and leaving the Foundation. I'm not sure where Storm goes from here.
Lawler made his entrance straight from the commentary booth, which definitely got a chuckle out of the MSG crowd while Joey Styles was left to call the action solo. It was a total clinic in old school psychology, starting with Lawler grounding the younger Corino with a hammerlock and crisp arm drags that had Corino retreating to the ropes and throwing a massive temper tantrum. Corino, being the arrogant prick he is, started mocking the fans and screaming that he was the only "Real King" in the building before catching Lawler with a thumb to the eye and targeting his neck with stiff forearms. At one point, Corino even pulled down his own imaginary straps to mock Lawler's signature routine, only for the King to fire back with a flurry of the best punches in the business and a big fist drop from the middle rope that nearly ended it. The finish was pure old school heat as Lawler went for the Piledriver to finally put the "King of Old School" away, but Corino managed to slip out and shove Lawler into the referee, knocking the official silly. With the ref dazed and slumped in the corner, Corino reached into his trunks and pulled out a pair of brass knuckles, leveling Lawler with a sickening right hand. As Lawler collapsed, Corino tucked the evidence away, hauled the King up, and nailed him with the Old School Expulsion. The referee slowly came too just in time to count the 3 for the King of Old School!
Another good match tonight. The change of pace to a more traditional wrestling match was a nice thing actually, and Lawler can still go in that style. The man throws the best punches in the business. Corino has really risen up, almost out of nowhere, and the crowd hates him.
The cage lowered to a massive "Shane-O-Mac" chant that shook the rafters of the Garden, while DDP was met with a wall of boos that almost drowned out his music. Shane didn't wait for the bell, charging the veteran the second the door was locked, but the experienced Page caught him coming in with a stiff kitchen-sink knee to the gut. Page quickly took control, whipping Shane into the steel mesh and grating his face against the fence until the boss was staggered and leaking from the forehead. DDP stood over him, mocking Shane’s "shuffle" with a disgusting smirk, but the fighting face fired back with a flurry of lefts and rights that sent the heel reeling into the corner. The two brawled wildly against the cage wall, with Shane finally gaining the upper hand after a series of stiff European uppercuts. Shane climbed to the top rope for a massive diving lariat that leveled the "Self-Proclaimed" Foundation of WCW and sent the Garden into a total frenzy. DDP managed to cut Shane off during a second attempt, catching him with a sit-out powerbomb in the center of the ring that nearly ended the match right there. In a last-ditch effort to finish it, Shane scrambled up the side of the mesh to get better positioning for a high-risk move, but Page caught him at the very top, and the two exchanged shots while clinging to the side of the cage above the top rope! Shane managed to get the advantage and starts to bash DDP's face into the top of the cage, causing DDP to lose his grip and go crashing to the mat with a thud you could hear in the nosebleeds. Shane then slowly stood up on the very top of the cage, soaking in the massive cheers from the MSG crowd, before taking flight with a prayer. Shane went for the Leap of Faith elbow drop from the top of the cage, but DDP was playing possum and rolled out of the way at the last possible millisecond! Shane crashes into the ring as the ring itself gives way from the impact, leaving Shane in a heap in a hammock like cocoon of the remnants of the wrestling ring. DDP stands up smiling, and begins to lift the lifeless WCW Owner out of the pit. He clinches Shane's head above his shoulder, Diamond Cutter! 1-2-3!
A fine match for someone like Shane who isn't a traditionally trained guy. The missed Elbow Drop was brutal. There's been higher bumps and more spectacular bumps, but that reminded me of Mick Foley's bump in Hell in a Cell when he went through the cell. DDP winning is really the only thing to do here, I thought maybe a new Foundation member was going to debut here to help him win, but the clean victory is probably better. After the match, DDP scales the Cage and celebrates on top as medical staff & Arn Anderson tend to the fallen WCW Owner in the ring.
