SHOW REVIEW: JULY 2001
July 25, 2001: WCW Nitro on FX Results
POSTED BY DYLAN DRAMA | JULY 26, 2001

The last stop before WCW Bash at the Beach is here. WCW Nitro is live from the Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum in Detroit, Michigan!

Joey Styles & Jerry "The King" Lawler welcome us to the show and run down what's already scheduled for tonight as the Pyro goes of and "Party Hard" by Andrew WK plays in WCW Nitro!

We are starting with WCW World Heavyweight Champion, Lance Storm! The champ is on his way to the ring with Dawn Marie and doesn't look happy. He needs to be serious for a minute. Storm is on the mic and starts complaining about BG James constantly getting lucky and that the series of wins James has been getting over Storm have all been flukes. Last week, Buff Bagwell cost Storm the match, Lance had that match won. This week, Storm was told he can have another chance to prove it was a fluke and to find a new partner, so he's found this man. Storm gestures to the entrance and here comes "The King of Old School" Steve Corino. Corino down to the ring, and he grabs a mic. Corino says he hasn't been in WCW long, but he already sees what Storm and others have been complaining about. The company is full of hasbeens and neverwases besides the select few like himself and Lance Storm. Tonight, the top of WCW will prove who they are when the King of Old School and Lance Storm win tonights main event.

That's enough for BG James to come out with Curt Hennig! Hennig on the stick first and calls Storm a heck of a competitor. In-fact, Hennig sees a lot of himself in Storm because Storm is gifted in that ring, some might even say he's close to perfect, which is why it drives him crazy that Lance wastes so much time making excuses because that is what is truly holding him back from being the true best in this business. Hennig then goes to Corino, saying how Corino reminds him of so many guys he's seen come and go. Good skills, but a big mouth. And the big mouth often gets in the way. If Corino think's he's really the "King of Old School" then he'll have to battle a little "Old School Perfection" in Curt Hennig.

James takes his turn and insults Corino & Storm with some fancy Doggisms and jive talking. He says that he has waited to long to blow the opportunity he has in front of him. His legacy in this business has already be written, but now, for the first time, he feels like he's the one holding the pen. Tonight, he partners with Curt Hennig, just like in the past has partnered with greats, but Sunday at Bash at the Beach, its 1-on-1 and The Doggfather will be walking away with the World Heavyweight Championship!

Match 1: 3 Count (Shane Helms & Shannon Moore) w/Evan Karagias vs. Los Dragones (Chavo Guerrero Jr. & Kaz Hayashi) w/Yun Yang

A preview of Bash at the Beach's 6-Man Tag Team Match and the Cruiserweights open the show in typical WCW fashion! Great match back and forth with all guys getting a chance to shine. It takes the crowd a bit to get into it, but they warm up pretty quick thanks to all the action. Match looks like its going 3 Counts way, but Yun Yang is constantly getting involved. This eventually leads to a big brawl on the outside between Yang & Karagias and Hayashi joins in the fray. Seeing his bandmate in trouble, Shane Helms dives off the apron onto all the men taking out the big pile. This leaves Moore & Chavo in the ring, and Chavo takes the opportunity as Moore is distracted by the action to drill the babyfaced Moore from behind. He hoists Moore and drops him with a Brainbuster for the 3.

Winners: Los Dragones
Rating: 5.9 / 10

The crowd is starting to come along. The matches keep being good or better, and now that the crowd seems to be getting more invested, the matches seem that much better because of it. Can't wait to see the 6-Man at BatB on Sunday.

Commercial and we are back a dimmly lit Italian Bistro.

In the Bistro, the FBI of Guido Maritato, Chuck Palumbo & Johnny Stamboli are celebrating Palumbo's win last week over some big plates of spaghetti. They are really leaning into the Italian-isms and accents. There's a loud table off screen that is beginning to agitate Guido, he eventually yells over and tells them to quiet down. As the camera pans over, we see Disqo & Mike Sanders having a candlelit dinner, but the camera continues to pan and reveals the Misfits In Action are also having dinner at another table! They have big pizzas in front of them and are laughing and having a good time. Their tag team titles even have their own seats at the table. Camera cuts back to the FBI who can't believe MIA would invade their favorite restaurant. They all stand up and approach MIA and threaten them. MIA laughs it off and says they can leave, but they'll see them on Sunday. One last thing... FOOD FIGHT! MIA flips the pizzas into the FBI's face and seem to dissappear. The entire restaurant erupts into a big food fight, leaving the FBI covered in Pasta & Pizza. As they sulk, the camera pans back to Disqo & Sanders, who are now hiding under their table. I AM ENTERTAINED!

Match 2: Billy Kidman vs. Kid Romeo w/Elix Skipper

Quick little cruiserweight showcase here. Kidman starts out in control early, but Romeo gets some stuff in after Skipper gets involved. Its not enough as Kidman fights back and quickly puts Romeo down with the Kid Krusher/Unprettier for the 3-count

Winner: Billy Kidman
Rating: 4.8 / 10

I admit, I almost forgot Kidman was on the roster, which is funny as on a roster so lacking in star power, I'd argue he was one of the more established names. Seems this match was to remind me and everyone else Kidman exists.

Backstage in Arn's Office. Arn Anderson has CW Anderson standing next to him behind his desk, as Pete Gas is alone sitting in front. Anderson says Pete Gas was an embarrassment last week. Weeks of Anderson training and that was the best he had to show? Arn says he has a show to run and a company to help manage, and if Pete isn't going to take his training seriously, Arn does not have time to string him along. CW is nodding along. Arn turns to his nephew, he claims CW is an Anderson, so he should have had Gas whipped into shape by now. Arn realizes now, that no matter how much the two of them bounce around his office, nothing beats the squared circle, so from now on, they can train in the ring like everyone else, because Pete Gas & CW Anderson are now a tag team and will be in action, next week on Nitro!

Match 3: Buff Bagwell vs. Tommy Dreamer

Bagwell is here to prove he can actually win a match, and Dreamer is here to prove basically the same thing. Good little brawl from the two and Dreamer is really putting his heart into it. He hits a suplex for a 2 count. Bagwell slides out to regroup and his having a fit at ringside. He grabs a chair and looks to bring it in the ring, but the referee stops him. Dreamer slides out as well, so Bagwell gives the chair to the ref, and as the ref is distracted, pokes Dreamer right in the eye. Bagwell pounds on Dreamer and sends him into the ringsteps. Bagwells puts more boots to Dreamer and sends him into the guardrail now and slides back into the ring. The ref had gotten back into the ring and had started a 10-count. Dreamer makes it in by 9! Bagwell continues the boots and hits a nice Double Arm DDT to Dreamer for a LONG 2 count. Bagwell is now arguing with the referee, inadvertently giving Dreamer time to recover. Bagwell finally turns back and eats a boot and a DDT from Dreamer. Dreamer slow to cover, and Bagwell is out at 2! Both men are slow to their feet and slowly trading punches in the ring. Dreamer gets the best of it and ends up backing Bagwell into the corner. Irish whip across the ring and Bagwell eats the turnbuckles to the sternum. Bagwell is hurt, but is trying to take the turnbuckle cover off. The referee catches him though and stops him. Dreamer goes to grab Bagwell from behind, but Bagwell hits him with the mule kick low blow! The ref was distracted again with the turnbuckle and didn't see it! Bagwell quickly shoves the ref out of the way and mounts the middle turnbuckle, turning to drill Dreamer with a Blockbuster. 1-2-3! Bagwell gets a victory!

Winner: Buff Bagwell
Rating: 5.9 / 10

I wanted to like this match. I was into what they are doing with Bagwell, but the match wasn't at that next level it should have been. It was fine, but just.

After the match, Bagwell is celebrating like he won the super bowl. He then turns to Dreamer and gets an evil look in his eye. He slides to the outside and grabs a chair again and slides back in. He starts screaming "You want Extreme! You want Extreme!" as he pounds the chair into the mat, Dreamer stands up and EATS a big chair shot to the head. Bagwell is maniacal with laughter as Dreamer is busted open. Bagwell tosses the chair down, but he isnt done. He lifts Dreamer up and is hooking him up for a Double Arm DDT onto the chair, but here comes Rob Van Dam! Bagwell quickly runs off, leaving RVD alone in the ring with a bloodied Tommy Draemer. Bagwell is shouting "Who's Extreme Now!" as he backs up the ramp smiling and RVD is left to check on Dreamer.

Match 4: Sean O'Haire vs. Matt Capicoli?

O'Haire is either really huge or this local guy is really small, or both. The bell rings, and O'Haire pulverizes the little man with a huge clothesline. Match is over, but O'Haire wants more. He lifts up the Mini-Matt and leaves him wobbly in the middle of the ring. O'Haire off the ropes, another huge clothesline which causes Cappuccino to do a big backflip inside out bump. O'Haire isn't done yet, he picks up the near lifeless Capricorn and hoists him onto his shoulders. MASSIVE Death Spiral and thats all O'Haire needs. One footed pin, and the 3 count.

Winner: Sean O'Haire
Rating: 3.9 / 10

I like a good squash, but I really think its time O'Haire show he can do more in the ring then a few big moves.

After the match, O'Haire is celebrating when Stacy Keibler appears at ringside. Looks like she didn't learn her lesson last week. She's on the apron and flashing her behind at the Psycho Killer! O'Haire is distracted and on cue, here's Shawn Stasiak to attack O'Haire from behind with a chop block. O'Haire actually sells it and is down on a knee. Stasiak quickly snags O'Haire and nails a Reverse DDT on the big man before sliding out of the ring and sprinting half way up the ramp. Stacy quickly joins his side as the two laugh at O'Haire. O'Haire is down, but not out, as he slowly is pulling himself up the ropes and frothing at the mouth with anger.

After the commercial break, the ring is set up with a nice red carpet and what looks like a bunch of old championships on display.

The music of Shane McMahon hits and out comes the Owner of WCW. Shane tells the fans he's heard a lot about what people think about WCW today and what people thought of WCW in the past. Shane wants to make one thing clear, he is the owner of WCW. When he bought this company, he bought the right to try and run the company the best way he knows how, and he bought the privelage of being the curator of its rich history. Harley Race, Ric Flair, Sting, The Rock'n'Roll Express, Harlem Heat, The Road Warriors, these are some of the names that built this company. And in this ring are some of the relics of WCW's past. The WCW World Heavyweight title, not the Big Gold belt, the one that WCW used when Flair took that to WWF is on display, and I can't quite make out the other titles, I think I see the Television title. Shane says that he has a literal warehouse in Charlotte that is full of things from WCW's past, and here is just a small sample. He has a big announcement today, as by Starrcade this year, WCW will open the World Championship Wrestling Museum in Charlotte, so that the rich and storied history of WCW is not left to rot, collect dust, and be forgotten, but on display, for generations to enjoy. As long as WCW is around, every week, they will make history.

This brings out Booker T who joins Shane in the ring. Before saying anything he reaches out and shakes Shane's hand. Booker walks over and there is a picture of Harlem Heat on one of the easel with what looks like their 10-WCW World Tag Team title reigns being highlighted on the bottom.

Booker has been with WCW a long time. He won 10 championships with his brother. He's won the United States and the WCW World Heavyweight title. Booker T is proud to be part of WCW's history and knows its not his history alone. In all the years he's been here, Booker says Shane is the first "suit" to show a real interest in what guys like him, guys like Sting, have built and the lineage they have created, and that's the reason he has earned Booker T's respect. That's the reason, Booker T thinks, Shane McMahon is the right person to lead this company into the future, that's why Booker T stands by Shane McMahon.

Thats enough for The Foundation! DDP is out alone it looks like, and he has a mic. He calls Booker a fool for believing Shane's "BS". Shane is no different then Eric Bischoff, he's an egomaniac. Shane is no different then Ted Turner, he's a disconnected rich idiot who thinks he can control the world. Shane can bring out whatever he wants and put it on display and claim he respects WCW's history, it doesn't mean anything because its DDP who deserves the respect. It's DDP that deserves the monument built in his honor. It's DDP that is the Foundation of this damn company.

As DDP speaks, Kanyon has snuck into the ring with a sledge hammer. It's too late as Booker turns at the last second but Kanyon nails him with a Triple-Hesque sledgehammer shot. Shane quickly jumps to Booker's defense and goes after Kanyon, but DDP is in the ring now, Kanyon and DDP quickly overwhelm Shane and in all the commotion have been knocking over all the old titles on display. Booker is up but eats another sledge shot from Kanyon. Shane alone in the ring now. DDP has the old WCW World Heavyweight title and lays it in the middle of the ring, Diamond Cutter to Shane ontop of the old title! Kanyon then motions to the picture of Harlem Heat still atop its easel. DDP laughs and nods and Kanyon begins destroying it with the sledgehammer. Kanyon drops the sledge hammer, but DDP has a weird look in his eyes staring down at Shane. DDP grabs the sledgehammer and Kanyon looks like he's actually begging DDP to think about what he's doing. DDP raises the sledgehammer above his head and brings it down, missing Shane, but smashing the old World Heavyweight title! Kanyon drags Shane out of the way and boots him to the outside. Kanyon turns around to see DDP repeatedly hitting the old title with the sledgehammer as it smashes and contorts.

Main Event: BG James & Curt Hennig vs. Lance Storm & Steve Corino

The match served as a technical clinic between Hennig and Storm early on, but the match gets scrapper as James and Corino have their turns. Corino refuses to tag Storm at one point when Storm demanded it, and Storm seems annoyed. Corino and Hennig finally end up facing off, and Corino uses every dirty trick in the book to try and take advantage. At one point, Corino looks like he's trying to set up a Fisherman's Suplex, but Hennig quickly spins out and shoves Corino into the ropes, causing him to accidentally collided with Storm on the apron. Storm, growing frustrated, refuses to get back on the apron. Corino desperately looks for a tag. Corino seems dumbfounded as Storm walks away, and turns right into some right hands from BG James. A shimmy and an elbow strike and Corino is thrashing around blind. James ties him up and nails a Pumphandle Drop for the 3!

Winners: BG James & Curt Hennig
Rating: 6.9 / 10
Overall Show Rating: 6.8 / 10
DYLAN'S FINAL THOUGHTS: A solid go-home show for Bash at the Beach. Falls just a bit shy from being the 7's and a properly great show, but like every WCW show since its return, its at worst okay and if anything good. The destruction of the old World title by DDP was a chef's kiss moment as the guy who claims to be fighting for WCW's history is now actively destroying it. The food fight in the Italian restaurant was fun too. And I am actually interested in what WCW is doing with Buff Bagwell. In 2001. Who would have thought!
