Welcome to TotalExtremeWrestlingNews.com's coverage of The Great American Bash presented by World Championship Wrestling! This is the second pay-per-view of WCW under the ownership of Shane McMahon, and the first since its official relaunch with The Big Bang a month ago!
We are LIVE at the FleetCenter in Boston, Massachusetts! Here are Joey Styles and Jerry "The King" Lawler in the middle of the ring. Very ECW-ish. They hype the card and run down every match. They send it to the truck for a big music and video package to get us going. As the video ends, Styles and King are at the commentary desk as the first match is about to start.
Match 1: WCW Patriot Cup Finals & WCW United States Championship: Rob Van Dam vs. Mike Awesome
Awesome is out first and RVD is second to a damn fine reaction. Styles mentions during RVD's entrance that the match is being contested under "Extreme Rules," and that had not been mentioned until now. The match is basically what everyone would have hoped for as the last true star of ECW goes one-on-one with one of its most dominant forces. Awesome is in control early and tosses RVD to the outside. The big man goes to dive over the ropes onto RVD, but RVD tosses a chair right into his face mid-jump! WOW! That allows RVD to take over with a chair shot and some kicks, and Awesome ends up draped over the guardrail. RVD to the apron, cue the thumbs, big spinning leg drop to Awesome across the rail, and Awesome falls back into the crowd. RVD doesn't give chase and gets in the ring instead. Up to the top, Awesome to his feet, HUGE SOMERSAULT PLANCHA FROM THE RING INTO THE CROWD BY RVD! Both men are down for a while, but RVD is up first. RVD tries to get Awesome to the ring but gets a low blow for his troubles. Awesome smashes RVD into the cement with a slam and drags him toward the ring. Awesome sets up a table at ringside. RVD rolls into the ring and Awesome tosses a chair into the ring before giving chase. Awesome slides in and eats a big dropkick with the chair to the head as he's sliding in from RVD. RVD places the chair on Awesome’s chest and hits a big Rolling Thunder! RVD goes to the top for a Five Star Frog Splash, but Awesome shoves the ref into the ropes. RVD is crotched and Awesome goes up top. Superplex into the ring. Now Awesome is headed up top, but RVD hits a springboard sidekick to Awesome's face. Awesome falls off the top THROUGH THE TABLE he set up at ringside earlier. Both men are down. Awesome somehow gets back into the ring; he has the chair already and stands up, goes to swing at RVD who ducks it, Van Daminator! Awesome is down! RVD up top, FIVE STAR FROG SPLASH ONTO AWESOME WITH THE CHAIR ON HIS CHEST! 1-2-3!
Winner of the WCW Patriot Cup and NEW WCW United States Champion: Rob Van Dam
Rating: 7.9 / 10
I imagine backstage RVD and Awesome were told to make a series of highlights to go in every WCW video package until the end of time, and boy did they deliver! Both guys looked great and had moments to shine. Crowd ate it up. Only thing holding it back is that it is a big chaotic hardcore match and the selling takes a bit of a backseat, but this match is exactly what WCW wanted and I think most fans dreamed of.
Match 2: WCW World Cruiserweight Championship vs. Hair Match: Shane Helms (c) vs. Chavo Guerrero Jr.
Handshake from the two to start the match as the barber chair is perched on the entranceway. So Chavo is a face? Chain wrestling and counters galore for the first many minutes of this match. These guys have wrestled so much dating back to the Ted Turner days, and they are really showing it here. More chain wrestling and Helms eventually gets the better of it with an "X-Plex," a straight jacket style German Suplex. 2-count but Chavo kicks out. Chavo to the outside to regroup and back in the ring. They go to lock up but Chavo just punches Helms in the face instead to take control. Big suplex from Chavo and a running leg drop, and Helms is in a sleeper. Helms is fighting back, but Chavo rips his head to the mat by his hair! Storytelling! Chavo is now standing on Helms' hair and pulling his arms in a throwback to an 80's spot. I guess Chavo isn't a face after all. Chavo now tosses Helms into the corner and charges in, but Helms is out of the way. Chavo back into a big jumping neckbreaker as Sugar Shane takes control. Lots of big moves from Helms and a slew of 2-counts, but Chavo is just holding on. Chavo with the desperation eye poke, a Tornado DDT out of the corner! 1-2-2.9 KICKOUT. That was close. Chavo pulls Helms up by the hair, but Helms slips away and sends Chavo into the ropes, big calf kick. Chavo is up slow, Helms is setting up the Vertebreaker! HE HITS IT. 1-2, the ref is pulled out of the ring by Yun Yang! The ref is yelling at Yang at ringside. Back in the ring and Kaz Hayashi is here! Helms turns to face Hayashi who was trying to attack him from behind, and Chavo low blows Helms! Hayashi hits a wacky Kryptonite Krunch variant on Helms and slides out of the ring. Chavo picks up Helms and drops him on his head with a Brainbuster. Ref is back in the ring now, 1-2-3, NEW CHAMPION!
Winner and NEW WCW World Cruiserweight Champion: Chavo Guerrero Jr.
Rating: 6.8 / 10
Really great match from the two. Crowd was in and out of it which hurts its overall presentation. The Jung Dragon interference drew boos, but also a bit of silence from parts of the crowd. Looks like Chavo and the Dragons are together? And Chavo keeps his hair.
Match 3: Table Match: Sean O'Haire vs. Chuck Palumbo
Styles mentions Johnny Stamboli is not in the building and is still recovering from his trip through the announce table earlier this week, so Palumbo is alone tonight. O'Haire and Palumbo start out brawling and end up all over the ring and ringside area. Palumbo takes control after O'Haire misses a wild kick on the outside and smashes into the ring post. Palumbo basically just beats on O'Haire for a bit and eventually goes for a table. He sets it up in the ring and goes outside to get O'Haire, who hits him with the big kick he missed earlier. O'Haire in control now and he ends up grabbing his own table, setting it up outside. He places Palumbo on it and goes to the apron. Palumbo rolls off the table and O'Haire hops down to give chase. They end up brawling up the ramp as Palumbo is seemingly trying to walk out. Palumbo ends up nailing O'Haire with a big suplex on the ramp. He takes O'Haire to the ring and is signaling for a Superkick, but O'Haire ducks it. Palumbo turns around and is hoisted right into the Death Spiral! Love that move. O'Haire picks up Palumbo, sets him up on the table in the ring, and to the top for the Sean-ton Bomb to drive Palumbo through the table, and the referee calls it!
Winner: Sean O'Haire
Rating: 5.2 / 10
It was ok. They are supposed to hate each other and basically had a 10-minute fist fight with a few big moves, and O'Haire eventually winning with the two biggest highlight-worthy moves. Match felt a bit neutered since RVD and Awesome had already used a table.
Before the next match can happen, Buff Bagwell is out. Bagwell is sour about not being on the PPV, but I see him on it as he speaks! So I don't know what his problem is. BG James is out after Bagwell threatens to sit in the ring until someone makes him leave. James cuts a long promo full of rhyming and wordplay that gets big reactions that someone will have to transcribe one day because it was good! Bagwell says he still isn't leaving so James charges the ring, and Bagwell leaves. Styles mentions the two are set to wrestle on Nitro this Wednesday.
Match 4: Street Fight: Shane McMahon vs. Kanyon
You know it's a street fight because Kanyon is wearing jeans and a t-shirt. Styles and King remind everyone that Shane McMahon lifted DDP's suspension and DDP is expected here tonight. Kanyon and Shane go at it and beat the living hell out of each other. Shane's punches somehow look like crap, but at the same time look stiff as hell and Kanyon is taking them like a trooper. Shane actually controls much of the early match and ends up with Kanyon down in the ring with a trash can on his chest. McMahon is up top and goes for a freaking SHOOTING STAR PRESS but misses as Kanyon moves and Shane eats the trash can. Ouch. Kanyon now taking control and dragging Shane to the outside. Shane gets tossed into the steps and Kanyon gets a 2-count on the outside. I guess this is falls count anywhere. The two are working their way up the ramp and Shane hits a suplex on the ramp. Memories of the first match tonight. McMahon now has Kanyon up to the top of the stage and the two exchange some blows. Kanyon takes control and sends McMahon into the stage setup. McMahon comes back bleeding. Kanyon looks like he's setting up a Flatliner, but McMahon is fighting out. A bunch of elbows and Shane ends up drilling Kanyon with a DDT on the stage! After a long wait, Shane goes for the cover, only 2. McMahon looks to bring Kanyon down to the ring, but Kanyon slips off the side of the ramp. Shane gives chase and Kanyon hits him with a stop sign that was randomly next to the stage I guess? Kanyon and Shane are now by the pyro desk, and Kanyon is looking to slam McMahon through the control desk? Shane slips out and then begins to repeatedly bash Kanyon's head into the controls as pyro goes off! Amazing! Kanyon is busted open. Shane has Kanyon on some sort of cart or electrical box thing? McMahon climbs up the side of the stage using a very convenient ladder and stands atop the stage over top of Kanyon. It’s a good 15 feet up there as it's a very tall stage with McMahon standing on an American Flag made out of metal. He signals a Hail Mary and leaps from the stage to drive an elbow through Kanyon, but Kanyon slips out of the way and Shane crashes through the big black box of nothing! That looked sick. Both men are down for a bit but Kanyon is to his feet. It looks like WCW medical staff and Terry Taylor are checking on Shane, but Kanyon pushes them all out of the way. He lifts up Shane who is basically out cold and nails a Flatliner. 1-2-3.
Winner: Kanyon
Rating: 7.4 / 10
This match was good. McMahon again went above and beyond what you'd expect and the match benefited from it. Kanyon was great too and you could tell he was really carrying Shane through the match spot-by-spot. No DDP is the biggest surprise as even commentary implied he'd be there, and Kanyon got the win clean, which is surprising too. Looks like WCW really has faith in Kanyon.
Match 5: WCW World Tag Team Championship: Misfits In Action vs. Disqo & Mike Sanders (c)
First match for Disqo and Sanders since winning the belts a month ago at Big Bang. Disqo and Cajun start out and Disqo actually runs the match for a while. Some quick tags between Disqo and Sanders as they double-team Cajun. Sanders isn't doing much though as maybe his shoulder injury isn't quite healed. Sanders eventually goes for his 3.0, but Cajun counters into the Whiplash but can't go for the pin. Double down spot and double tags made. Rection is in and cleans house after being on the apron the first 5 minutes. Big power moves and a big powerbomb to Disqo. Sanders is the legal man and MIA hit their Samoan Drop/Swinging Neckbreaker combo that Joey Styles calls the Court Martial, and that's a 3-count and new champions!
Winners and NEW WCW World Tag Team Champions: Misfits In Action
Rating: 5.4 / 10
It's the filler match of the night and did its job. Was a bit better than the table match I'd say too. MIA getting the belts seems like the right call, especially if Sanders is still hurt.
Backstage, Lance Storm is with Scott Hudson. Hudson asks Storm about his "insurance policy" and Storm says, it’s right here, and out walks Dawn Marie. Dawn Marie says a true champion needs a valet and "The Impact Player" is going to be the next WCW World Champion.
Main Event: WCW World Heavyweight Championship: Booker T (c) vs. Lance Storm w/ Dawn Marie
Storm and Marie make their way to the ring and "The Impact Player" is Storm's new nickname it seems. Booker out next to a big ovation. Storm and Booker lock up, and Storm immediately takes over with technical stuff. Wrist lock into hammerlock into headlock into toe drop into front headlock, Booker is fighting up, but Storm takes him over with a side headlock, headscissors on the ground, and Storm kips up. Booker trips him down, but Storm twists around and gets a grounded wrist lock and chain wrestling is freaking hard to keep up with. Crux of it is they wrestle a bit and Lance Storm keeps coming out on top. Storm eventually hits a big calf kick to Booker coming back off the ropes and that's the first true 2-count of the match. Storm going for a suplex, but Booker fights out and lands on his feet. Storm turns around into a big spinebuster and both guys are down for a while. Dawn Marie is cheering on Storm at ringside as both men fight to their feet. Big leg lariat from Booker and it's a 2-count for the champion. Fists are starting to fly and Booker is winning that exchange as Storm is forced into the corner. Big corner 10-punch and Storm is reeling. Kick to the gut and a Scissors Kick from Booker gets a LONG 2-count. Storm is panicking and is out of the ring. Booker is taunting Storm to get back in the ring, holding open the ropes as Dawn Marie tries to comfort the Canadian. Ref starts a late 10-count and Storm is just walking around until 9; he slides into the ring and slides right back out to break the count, but the referee starts again. Gets to 9 and Storm does the same thing. Now Booker is hopping out of the ring to the outside and chasing Storm. Dawn steps in Booker’s way as Storm slides back into the ring and hits a quick baseball slide to Booker. Storm hits a dive over the top onto the champ and Booker is in trouble. Storm tosses him back in and looks like he's setting up a Pedigree? Booker fights out and backdrops Storm, arm wrench and a big side kick from Booker, and Booker is poised for the Book End. Storm is fighting it and elbows Booker off. Booker off the ropes and Storm drops down and LOCKS IN THE CANADIAN MAPLE LEAF! Booker is fighting to the ropes and isn't tapping, but Storm has the Maple Leaf on tight! Booker is almost there, but Storm drags him to the middle of the ring. Booker's about to tap, but no! He's pushing up! Onto his hands and one knee. Booker is dragging himself to the ropes and gets there! Referee Nick Patrick gets to 4 and tells Storm to break the hold. Storm is livid; he has Patrick in the corner and is berating him. Booker is pulling himself up by the ropes on one leg. Storm turns and charges, but Booker grabs him with a one-legged Book End! 1-2-Dawn Marie puts Storm's foot on the rope! Wait, something is happening in the ring, it's Kanyon! Kanyon has grabbed Nick Patrick and has him in the corner. HERE COMES DIAMOND DALLAS PAGE! He slides in the ring. Booker is trying to fight him off but is on one leg. DIAMOND CUTTER! DDP slides out and Kanyon slowly does too. Storm slowly crawls over... 1-2-3! STORM DID IT! STORM DID IT! NEW CHAMPION!
Winner and NEW WCW World Heavyweight Champion: Lance Storm
Rating: 7.0 / 10
The match was great and the fans were into it, but the two big pauses in the match with Storm's 10-count chicken spot and the Canadian Maple Leaf being on Booker for what felt like 5 minutes were great if you think about the story being told, but took the crowd out of it a bit. Also DDP and Kanyon getting involved to help Storm was out of nowhere and really unexpected.
After the match, DDP and Kanyon celebrate in the ring like they just won the title. They go to high-five Lance Storm who just rolls out of the ring and starts walking to the back with Dawn Marie and his new WCW World Heavyweight Championship. The camera cuts to Booker T, sitting on the ground at ringside looking utterly defeated and clutching his knee. Cut back to DDP and Kanyon raising each other's hands in the center of the ring as the PPV fades out.
OVERALL SHOW RATING: 7.6 / 10
DYLAN'S FINAL THOUGHTS: Money well spent on a great PPV. Peaked early with RVD and Awesome being the match of the night, but Helms vs. Chavo, Shane vs. Kanyon, and Booker vs. Storm were worth the price alone. A lot of storyline building happening with new alliances and new complicated relationships everywhere. Lots of new champions, most notable of which is Lance Storm.
