Verne Gagne

Biography

A true architect of professional wrestling, Verne Gagne was a world-class amateur athlete who transformed the business as both a performer and a promoter. While he is legendary for founding the AWA and holding its World Heavyweight Championship ten times, his influence was a cornerstone of the heritage WCW sought to honor.

Gagne’s commitment to technical excellence and his role in training dozens of future WCW icons—including Ric Flair and Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat—made him a foundational figure in the industry. In 1993, his lifetime of achievement was officially recognized when he was inducted as a charter member of the WCW Hall of Fame at the inaugural Slamboree.
