WCW Nitro LIVE on FX Review
January 23, 2002

WCW Souled Out is just around the corner! That happened fast. But tonight, its Andrew WK’s lovely “Party Hard” over the intro video, the big booming pyro, the screaming fans of Portland, Oregon in the Portland Memorial Coliseum and Joey Styles & Jerry “The King” Lawler on the commentary desk to call the action! After the smoke has cleared, here come the Full Blooded Italians! Guido Maritato followed by Chuck Palumbo & Johnny Stamboli. The FBI is in the ring and Guido has a mic.

Guido: "Hey, Rob Van Dam, listen to me! Enjoy that U.S. title while you can, because this Sunday at Souled Out, your little reign hits a wall! You got lucky against Stamboli, and you got lucky against Palumbo, but you forgot the golden rule, the FBI is famiglia. We’re blood, we’re strength in numbers, and we always protect our own! So tonight, my challenge stands. You think you're tough? You better find a partner and try to beat Palumbo and Stamboli in the ring. When you fail, the FBI will be lurking in every corner this Sunday. But if by some miracle you win, I’ll keep the family away from ringside. Capiche?"

The distorted guitar lick of RVD’s theme rips through the arena, and here comes the United States Champion with a microphone. He stops on the ramp and soaks in the massive pop and “R-V-D!” chant.

RVD: "Guido, you talk a big game for a guy who always hides behind his friends. You see, unlike you, RVD can compete week in and week out, against one, two, or all of you, because I’m the Whole Dam Show! You think I'm scared of a tag team match? I welcome it, because I already found a partner for tonight, a man I happen to have a lot in common with, and a man who loves shaking things up just as much as I do!"

RVD looks back towards the entrance way, and here comes D’Lo Brown! D’Lo joins RVD on the stage, and the two then charge the ring. The FBI scatter as Rob Van Dam & D’Lo Brown stand shoulder to shoulder and Joey Styles says the “Frog Splash Express” has arrived.

Match 1
Six-Person Mixed Tag Team Match
Shark Squad (La Sharka, Shark Boy & Shark Girl) vs. Jazz, Disqo & Mike Sanders

Shark Boy and Mike Sanders start things off, and Shark Boy is immediately using his hands as fins with goofy fin slaps to confuse Sanders. Sanders looks annoyed, misses a clothesline, and eats a deep arm drag. Disqo tags in and tries to show off some of his classic dance moves, but La Sharka tags in and matches him step-for-step before leveling him with a heavy shoulder block Disqo scrambles and tags in Jazz, which means Shark Girl must enter the match. Jazz plays it completely straight, immediately aggressively trapping Shark Girl in the corner with heavy stomps. Jazz hoists Shark Girl up for a massive vertical suplex, but Shark Girl wiggles out and shoves Jazz into Sanders, knocking him off the apron and rocking Jazz. Shark Girl sneaks right up behind the champion, leans in, and bites the backside of Jazz! Jazz screams out in agony, and Shark Girl quickly rolls her up from behind! 1—2—3! It's over!

Winners: Shark Squad Rating: 5.2 / 10
Dylan’s Thoughts: The Shark Squad simply cannot lose. I feel like they haven’t lost in like 2-months. They are a great undercard act though. Jazz, Disqo & Sanders are similar all great at filling in the undercard right now and this overall is the kind of storyline and segment you need on shows. Excited for Jazz vs. Shark Girl at Souled Out as its really the first time we’ll have two women who can actually wrestle, wrestle each other. The Shark Squad run up the ramp celebrating. At the top, they all stop and La Sharka leads them in one of his weird strut dances that Shark Boy & Shark Girl imitate. In the ring, Jazz is incensed and Disqo & Sanders are trying to calm her down. She shoves Disqo aside and then powerslams Sanders in a fit of rage.

The ring is set up with a black carpet, a long table, and three chairs. WCW President Ric Flair stands in the middle with a microphone, flanked by security. Flair introduces the challenger first, and Steve Corino walks down the ramp oozing confidence, sporting a sharp suit and a smug smile. Next comes the WCW World Heavyweight Champion, and Booker T gets a thunderous reaction from the Portland crowd, walking with pure intensity.

Flair: "Gentlemen, this Sunday at Souled Out, the talking stops. We are here to sign the contract to make this official. But I'll tell you both right now, I am sick and tired of the stolen property and complete lack of respect for that championship. Sign this paper so we can get to Sunday."

Corino: "Relax, Ric. Look at the champion, everyone. He’s sweating, he’s nervous. You see, Booker, I've already proven I can take what's yours whenever I want. You walk around here calling yourself a five-time champion, acting like you're the greatest to ever lace up a pair of boots, but being a five-time champion just means you lost it four-times. I'm a student of this business, a man who lives and breathes the true history of this sport. I’ve watched your tapes, I’ve studied your weaknesses, and I know exactly how to dismantle you. This Sunday, I am going to out-wrestle you, out-class you, and take that title permanently. You're yesterday's news, Booker, and I'm the future that's come to collect. Steve Corino will be a one-time champion, because once I have that title, it will never leave my waist!"

Booker T: "You think you're old school, Corino?! You talk about studying tapes, you talk about history, but you haven't lived it! You think stealing a belt makes you a champion? You think playing these little mind games makes you a wrestler? Being the champion means stepping through these ropes and proving you're the best night in and night out! You’re just a thief with a sucka's smile, hiding behind your words because you’re scared to death of what happens when you’re locked in that ring with a real man. I don't need politics, and I don't need your twisted games. This Sunday, you're looking at the 5-time, 5-time, 5-time champion, and I'm not just going to beat you, I'm going to beat respect into your ass!"

As tension reaches a boiling point and both men stand up, pulling back their chairs, Ric Flair steps directly between them.

"Hold on! Hold on a minute! I knew neither of you could keep your hands to themselves. So to ensure that this match has a definitive, fair outcome, I have a special, WOO, announcemnt. This Sunday at Souled Out, I am officially inserting myself into the match as the Special Ringside Enforcer, again! Woo! And if either of you step out of line, you'll answer to the Nature Boy! WOO!"

Flair smiles and starts strutting around as Booker T looks annoyed. Booker grabs the World Heavyweight title and slides out of the ring and marches to the back, as Flair struts in the ring and Corino stands by looking amused.

Match 2
WCW World Hardcore Championship
Hardcore Match
Tommy Dreamer (c) vs. Elix Skipper

As soon as the bell rings, Skipper tries to use his incredible speed to avoid Dreamer, but Dreamer catches him on the rebound and cracks him over the head with a trash can lid! Dreamer goes right under the apron and pulls out a baking sheet and a couple of steel chairs, tossing them into the ring. Skipper rallies, using his athleticism to drop-kick a steel chair directly into Dreamer's face as the champion tries to climb back inside! Skipper is surprisingly adapting well to the hardcore environment, placing a trash can over Dreamer's head and hitting a springboard leg drop across it for a very close two-count. Skipper sets up a table in the center of the ring, looking to make a huge statement. He drags Dreamer to the corner and tries to set him up for a superplex through the wood. Dreamer fights back with stiff right hands, breaking Skipper's grip. Dreamer hooks Skipper on the middle turnbuckle, he hoists him up onto his shoulders and delivers a massive Spicolli Driver off the middle rope straight through the table! The table completely shatters! Dreamer collapses into the cover, 1—2—3!

Winner and still WCW World Hardcore Champion: Tommy Dreamer Rating: 5.4 / 10
Dylan’s Thoughts: One of the better Hardcore matches since the division came back, and Skipper did well thanks to his athleticism despite not being a hardcore guy. Dreamer picks up another defense as a collision course with Amos seems inevitable.

Dreamer can barely celebrate his victory before being tackled by Amos Hersch who appeared from seemingly nowhere! Hersch beats on Dreamer and this him with a Sidewalk Slam onto a chair in the ring. He then goes outside and grabs a trash can before returning to the ring. Dreamer has recovered and hits Amos with a big Singapore Cane shot, but Amos no-sells it and clobbers Dreamer with a big clubbing forearm blow. Hersch smacks Dreamer with the trash can then drags him to the corner placing the can on his chest. Middle rope for Amos and a Deadweight Elbow pancakes the can onto Dreamer like Velocity. Amos stands tall as Dreamer is left in a lifeless heap. Back from commercial and “Here Comes The Money!” WCW Owner Shane McMahon is on his way to the ring alongside Sean O’Haire and BG James. Shane & O’Haire are both wearing their World Tag Team titles as the three men enter the ring and McMahon has a mic.

"Portland, Oregon, let me hear you! Look at this ring right here. The 'Doggfather' BG James is finally back, and the band is officially back together because Team WCW is ready to ride again! As announced earlier on WCW.com, sorry for the cheap plug, this Sunday at Souled Out, it is going to be Sean O'Haire, BG James, and myself taking on The Foundation in a massive six-man tag team match. But we are raising the stakes, because our WCW World Tag Team Championships will be on the line! Whichever faction wins this war walks away with the gold and can select any two of its members to be the champions. Now, listen up, DDP. I never wanted to win gold in this company, and I never wanted to be a wrestler. But when your little group of cowards brutally took BG James out at Starrcade, you made this personal. I had completely enough, and I inserted myself into this fight. This Sunday, Team WCW takes out The Foundation for good!"

As Shane finishes speaking, the dance music of The Rainbow Express hits and Kwee Wee, Lenny Lane & Lodi are strutting their way to the ring.

Match 3
Team WCW (BG James, Sean O’Haire & Shane McMahon) vs. Rainbow Express (Kwee Wee, Lenny Lane & Lodi)

Lodi and BG James start things off, and James immediately takes control, unleashing his signature jabs and a big elbow flooring Lodi, before nailing his shaky-sharky knee drop that gets the crowd unglued. Lodi desperately tags out to Lenny Lane, but Sean O'Haire enters the match and completely cleans house, throwing Lenny across the ring with a massive military press slam. Kwee Wee tries to run in to help his partners, but Shane McMahon tags in, hitting a flying clothesline and throwing wild lefts and rights on everyone in sight. Team WCW is completely dominating this match, showing flawless chemistry. The match breaks down into absolute chaos as all six men enter the ring. O'Haire catches a charging Kwee Wee on the rebound and plants him into the mat with a devastating Death Spiral! Simultaneously, Shane McMahon hooks Lenny Lane and drops him flat with a sharp Flatliner! Seeing his partners go down, Lodi turns right into BG James, who hooks his arms and delivers a Pumphandle Drop! All three members of Team WCW drop down into simultaneous lateral presses on their respective opponents, and the referee counts the 3!

Winners: Team WCW Rating: 6.4 / 10
Dylan’s Thoughts: Team WCW gets the obvious victory to go into Souled Out. Not much to say about this one, everyone did their job, it was okay, nothing to jump for joy about, the match did its job.

Team WCW is still in the ring and here comes The Foundation. Diamond Dallas Page, Kanyon, Mike Awesome & Billy Kidman on the stage. DDP has a microphone.

"Enjoy your little celebration while you still can, Shane-O-Mac! Enjoy it, because this Sunday at Souled Out, your little fairytale comes to an end. You think BG James being back changes anything? You think putting those tag team titles on the line in a six-man match favors you? The Foundation was built on the blood, sweat, and tears of men who actually built this industry, not silver spoon fed brats like you! This Sunday, Kanyon, Mike Awesome, and myself are going to walk into Knoxville, we are going to dismantle you and your team of kiss asses, and we are going to take back those World Tag Team Championships. And once the gold is around our waists, we aren't just stopping there, we are going to take the very soul of World Championship Wrestling, and there is absolutely nothing you can do to stop us! Bang!"

We get a video package showing the history of Billy Kidman & Rey Mysterio, including shots of Mysterio unmasked but edited in a way to try and show as little of his face as possible. The package is interspliced with interviews from Rey Mysterio talking about Lucha Libre and the importance of Cruiserweight wrestling, and Billy Kidman talking about how he never really liked Rey, but used him as an ends to a means to get to the top of the mountain where he belongs.

Match 4
Misfits In Action (General Rection & Corporal Cajun) w/Torrie Wilson vs. Norman Smiley & Willy Fraizer

Fraizer and Corporal Cajun start things off fast, with Cajun hitting a quick dropkick that sends Fraizer reeling into the corner. Norman Smiley tags in and tries to slow things down, attempting to hook Cajun into a full nelson, but General Rection tags in and completely shuts it down with a massive clothesline. Rection hits a heavy running splash in the corner on Smiley, then tags Cajun back in. Fraizer runs back into the ring to try and help his partner, but he gets caught by Cajun. Cajun positions him perfectly, hooks him up, and nails the Whiplash in the center of the ring! Smiley is kept at bay by Rection on the outside as Cajun hooks Fraizer's leg for the quick pinfall.

Winners: Misfits In Action Rating: 6.1 / 10
Dylan’s Thoughts: A surprise of a match here as it was better than I expected. MIA seems a bit aimless a the moment, but nice to see them back on TV as the fans do respond to them. Smiley & Fraizer really have become enhancement talents at this point, which is fine, but Fraizer is still young and maybe could do more. Smiley seems like a candidate to eventually move into a backstage role if you ask me as his career seems to be winding down. Maybe he needs to be back in the Hardcore division.

Arn’s Office is back! We are in Arn’s Office with WCW Commissioner Arn Anderson and his new assistant Tajiri. Arn is trying to talk to Tajiri, but Tajiri keeps replying in Japanese. So Arn tries to talk slower, but Tajiri instead just speaks Japanese faster. Arn looks annoyed and asks Tajiri if he has his coffee, but Tajiri begins giggling and holds a cup up and simply says “Tea!” Arn says he doesn’t like Tea, but Tajiri just giggles again. Curt Hennig then walks in and shakes Arn’s hand and Tajiri’s as well. Arn thanks Curt for showing up and asks him to sign the contract for his match with Jarrett on Sunday. Curt quickly does and promises to teach Jarrett some respect. As Curt turns to leave, Jeff Jarrett is standing in the door way. The two walk nose-to-nose. Tajiri in the background looking worried. Jarrett tells Hennig to step aside and then shoves Hennig. Anderson hold’s Hennig back as Jarrett signs the contract. Jarrett tells Hennig he’ll see him at Souled Out, and turns to leave, but quickly turns back and begins to swing his guitar at Hennig, but Tajiri is now standing in the way and giggling, freezing Jarrett in tracks as green liquid begins to dribble out of Tajiri’s mouth.

We get another Lost Church vignette, this time however, we see and hear Christopher Daniels preaching inside an abandoned looking church to Viscz, Mortis & James Mitchell.

"World Championship Wrestling is a kingdom built on false idols and broken promises. They cast aside the unique, they abandoned the powerful, and they left these lost souls to rot in obscurity. But in the darkness, they found salvation under the guidance of the Fallen Angel. The Lost Church is no longer goign to sit forgotten, whispered in the shadows. We are a gathering storm, a holy army ready to rise from the abyss and bring a terrifying reckoning to anyone who has forgotten us. Repent... for the gates are open, and your judgment is at hand!"
Match 5
Rob Van Dam & D’Lo Brown vs. Full Blooded Italians (Chuck Palumbo & Johnny Stamboli) w/Guido Maritato

D'Lo and Stamboli lock up to start, with Stamboli using his power to push D'Lo into the corner, but D'Lo fires right back with a series of clotheslines and a big Head Shaking Leg Drop. Palumbo tags in and the FBI starts utilizing quick tags to isolate D'Lo, hitting a double-team shoulder tackle that gets a two-count. Guido Maritato is shouting instructions from the outside, looking very confident. D'Lo finally hits a desperation swinging neckbreaker on Palumbo and makes the hot tag to Rob Van Dam! RVD comes in leveling Stamboli with a spinning heel kick and dropping Palumbo with a springboard side kick off the ropes! The crowd is absolutely losing it. RVD hits the ropes for Rolling Thunder, but Guido grabs his ankle from the floor! The distraction allows Palumbo to clobber RVD from behind with a big boot. The FBI isolates RVD for a few minutes, but Van Dam fights out of a supplex attempt by Palumbo, and hitting a big step over spin kick after catching a wayward kick from Palumbo. RVD tags D'Lo back in, who comes in clearing house, hitting a Sky High on Stamboli! Palumbo tries to interfere, but D'Lo drops him with another Sky High. D'Lo tags in RVD and then scales the opposite turnbuckle, as RVD climbs the near one. At the exact same time, RVD & D'Lo leap from the top rope on either side, crushing Stamboli and Palumbo with a pair of Frog Splashes! RVD quickly hooks Stamboli's leg, and the match is over!

Winners: Rob Van Dam & D’Lo Brown Rating: 7.9 / 10
Dylan’s Thoughts: RVD continues to pull off great matches, but everyone else did their part here. D’Lo & RVD went from feuding to a soft alliance and it works. The double Frog Splash spot looked great and all guys walk away from this looking better than they came in, in my eyes.
Overall Show Rating: 8.0 / 10
Dylan’s Final Thoughts: A great go-home show for Souled Out, if you don’t count Velocity. WCW has done a great job using the little lull period after the big show to give some new guys a chance. The FBI has really benefitted and while I don’t see Guido becoming US champ, even with the losses I feel they’ve benefitted. D’Lo is getting a shot, Jarrett is back and doing well, the Shark Squad continues to rise, Corino has taken his opportunity to be in big promos and has blown it away. Booker, Flair & Corino all deserve credit as their segments have been fantastic. The Team WCW vs. Foundation is getting a little tired, but continues to provide good television. Jazz is doing well. Dreamer & Amos are getting some focus. The Lost Church is coming. A lot of faces are getting on the show and that’s awesome. It will be nice when Lance Storm is back though as I think he’s been sadly missed and not on any TV since the Nitro after Starrcade. Though it looks like he is being used wrestling Flair after the shows to get Flair back into ring shape. Bring on Souled Out!
